Children's dental care by age
A healthy smile begins during the very first months of a child's life. Many parents believe that dental care should start only after the first tooth appears. In reality, proper oral hygiene begins much earlier. Each stage of childhood has its own dental care needs. When oral hygiene is adapted to a child's age, the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and future bite problems can be significantly reduced.
From birth until the first tooth appears
Even though there are no teeth yet, the mouth still requires daily care. After feeding, gently wipe the baby's gums with a clean, damp gauze pad or a silicone finger toothbrush. This helps remove milk residue and allows your baby to become familiar with oral care from an early age.
When the first tooth appears
As soon as the first tooth erupts, daily brushing should begin. Use a children's toothbrush with a small head and soft bristles. Brush your child's teeth twice a day—once in the morning and again before bedtime.
Ages 1–3
At this age, children become interested in brushing their teeth but are not yet able to do it effectively on their own. Parents should brush or closely supervise every brushing session. Developing a daily oral hygiene routine is just as important as teaching children to wash their hands.
Choose:
• a children's toothbrush with soft bristles,
• a small brush head that easily reaches every area of the mouth,
• a comfortable handle that is easy for parents to hold.
Use a toothpaste containing 1,000 ppm fluoride.
The recommended amount is the size of a grain of rice.
Ages 3–6
Children at this age usually want to brush their teeth independently, but parental supervision remains essential.
It is recommended to use:
• a soft children's toothbrush,
• a small brush head,
• toothpaste containing 1,000 ppm fluoride,
• a pea-sized amount of toothpaste.
Once the child can spit out toothpaste without swallowing it, regular children's fluoride toothpaste can be used safely.
Ages 6–12
This is the period when permanent teeth begin to emerge, making proper protection especially important.
It is recommended to use:
• a soft or medium-soft toothbrush,
• toothpaste containing 1,350–1,450 ppm fluoride,
• brush twice a day for two minutes,
• begin using dental floss.
If your child wears an orthodontic appliance or braces, interdental brushes should also be used.
Age 12 and older
From this age, children can usually switch to an adult toothbrush and toothpaste containing 1,450 ppm fluoride.
It is recommended to:
• brush teeth twice a day,
• floss daily,
• use a mouthwash only if recommended by a dentist,
• visit a pediatric dentist for a preventive check-up every six months.
The most common mistakes parents make
Even parents who want the best for their children sometimes make common oral care mistakes, such as:
• waiting until all baby teeth have appeared before starting oral hygiene,
• allowing young children to brush entirely on their own,
• choosing toothbrushes with bristles that are too hard,
• using fluoride-free toothpaste without a dentist's recommendation,
• taking their child to the dentist only after pain develops.
How often should a child visit a pediatric dentist?
Even if your child has no complaints, it is recommended to schedule a preventive dental examination at least once every six months. Regular check-ups allow cavities, bite problems, and other dental issues to be detected at an early stage, when treatment is simpler and more effective.
